The Strangest Event

9/11/2K6

"the strangest event in the whole history of the Ring"

-- Gandalf, of Bilbo finding the Ring (Fellowship, p. 65)

Bilbo's finding the Ring is an expression of supernatural providence in The Lord of the Rings.

It was a helluva coincidence. The Ring slipping off Gollum's finger. Bilbo lost in the labyrinth of caves under the Misty Mountains, just happening to put his hand on the Ring in the dark.

It was "the strangest event" (Fellowship, p. 65).
