-- Gandalf's description of the nine men who became the Nazgûl (Fellowship, p. 60)

The idea that pride is the root of evil also finds expression in that the men who became the Ringwraiths were proud. Gandalf relates to Frodo that the nine who accepted the rings of power for mortal men were "proud and great" (Fellowship, p. 60).
