Intel Core 2 Microprocessor Delay

Intel may be pushing back the date for the launch of Core 2 processors (from July 23 to July 27), but the company shall also release some chipsets along with it, namely the G965 and the Q963. That’s the Q963 chipset, not the Q965. The Q965 is not to debut until later, in September, as part of the vPro product platform launch for business PCs.

New 965 Chipsets and Intel Motherboards

Intel motherboards based on the 965 series of chipsets are on tap for July, August, and September. The DG965SS will be “the first Intel branded motherboard released“. Viiv 1.5 makes its debut with some of the new boards and chipsets. So does vPro. Viiv and vPro are two of Intel’s product platforms. Like Centrino is to notebooks, so Viiv is for entertainment PCs, and vPro for business computers.

Xeon 5100 Series

Intel releases the Xeon 5100 series of server processors today. The chips are “the first to take advantage of Intel’s Core microarchitecture“. The server chips are priced competitively–about as much as desktop processors. The entire systems, however, will cost more. Get ready for “the fastest-ramping product in the company’s history“.
