nForce 780i Launches Same Day as Penryn

Monday, October 1st, 2007

TechConnect says that the nForce 780i SLI chipset launches the same day as Penryn. The core logic is “set to have a hard launch on November 12″.

Intel and NVIDIA may end up stealing each other’s thunder by launching silicon on the same day. However, the launch of the 780i SLI may be complementary to the Penryn launch, since the chipset supports Core 2 Penryn desktop processors. That being said, the chipset supports other processors as well, and NVIDIA is also supposed to launch GPUs.

The core logic supports three PCIe 2.0 x16 configurations and tri-SLI.

Only DDR2 shall be supported at first. Then in Q1 of next year an updated chipset will support DDR3.

Penryn launches November 12.
