7/22 - It looks like there's a distinction between launch dates and ship dates for PC processors.
Intel intends to "launch" mobile Core 2 Duo (Merom) the same day that it "launches" desktop Core 2 (Conroe), in late July. However, the shipping dates for mobile Core 2 remain unchanged, presumably late August.
The reason for launching mobile and desktop Core 2 together appears to be the same as the reason for giving the two chips the same brand identity: similarity of technology. "It’s meaningless to launch them separately".
