7/19 - It has long been known that Intel intends to reduce the cost of its Pentium D 805 chip to about $93 around the time that desktop Core 2 Duo becomes available, effectively bringing dual-core to the masses for under $100.
If that weren't enough, Intel also plans to knock down the price of its Pentium D 820 chip to less than $100, come late October.
Disadvantages of the Pentium D 805 and 820? No EIST (Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology) for starters. The chips also lack VT (Virtualization Technology). They are 64-bit chips, however, and they also have the Execute Disable Bit.
Possibly the primary reason for the price drops is to move inventory. Intel needs to sell its Pentium D chips, so they won't end up competing against low end Core 2 Duo offerings: to avoid "competing with Conroe".
