7/17 - It is confusing enough to have one brand name for both mobile and desktop processors. That would be Core 2 Duo. However, Intel is also using one codename for both a server chip and a desktop chip. That codename would be Conroe.
Conroe is the codename of desktop Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme. However, a future Xeon processor is "codenamed Conroe also".
The Xeon 3000 series will target low end, uni-processor (UP) systems.
Not suprisingly, the server and desktop versions of Conroe are very similar, if not identical: 1066MHz front-side bus (FSB), VT (virtualization technology), EIST (Enhanced Intel Speedstep), EM64T (64-bit extensions), Execute Disable Bit, a Socket LGA 775 form factor. The list goes on: amounts of cache, clock speeds. Even the pricing is very similar.
The main difference lies in the chipset that is used.
Intel currently uses Pentium D processors in its low end servers. This apparently was a response to AMD's Opteron. Opteron in turn responded with its 1xx (Socket 939) servers. Intel is again responding by nixing the desktop processors used in its low end servers.
However, this may be a difference in name only.
