New Version of NAND Flash Memory

7/3 - Samsung has developed a new type of NAND flash memory, that combines the fast read speeds of NOR flash with the fast write speeds of NAND. The chip features "NOR flash memory's fast ‘read' speed and NAND flash's high-capacity plus fast ‘write' speed".

Moreover the chips can be interleaved, so that bandwidth scales many times higher.

Samsung specifies use of the new memory inside hybrid hard drives, HKEPC inside solid state disks. Per HKEPC, this should make the solid state disk more efficient than a "traditional SATA hard drive running in raid 0".

Solid states disks should be more durable than traditional magnetic hard disk drives, too. The NAND memory provides "excellent shock protection to reduce the chance of data loss".
