6/22 - Intel has officially put into production its third 65nm fab and first in Europe. "Intel is currently producing more than half its PC and server microprocessors using this industry-leading process technology".
The fabrication plant cost $2 billion (USD) to build and makes 300mm wafers on a 65nm process technology. Those are big wafers, and that's alot of CPU dies. The fab ought to "to generate the world’s highest microprocessor output at the lowest cost".
The other two 65nm manufacturing plants are in the United States: Fab 12 in Arizona, and D1D in Oregon. The one in Ireland is known as Fab 24-2. Most "chip firms have not yet shipped products based on 65nm".
While Intel ramps 65nm, development of 45nm is underway. Intel bumps down the process technology about once every two years. Samples of 45nm have already been produced. Expect production to begin "by the end of 2007".
