1/14 - The Ethernet Alliance announced its formation earlier this week. It's about time. Ethernet has been around for about 25 years. Better late than never, though. There have been previous alliances based upon specific Ethernet technologies and projects. The Ethernet Alliance, however, changes this paradign. The new allaince will "will exist for as long as it remains relevant to IEEE 802 Ethernet technology".

Samsung has a new production line issuing large screen, 32" and 40" TV panels based on LCD technology. The company has begun shipping panels from this second 7th generation production line before its competitors have shipped any in volume. Before this second line kicked in, LCD was already the leading panel technology for large screen TVs. Now the LCD market is expected to ship approximately four times as many displays as plasma this year. Or over 40 million units, "which far surpasses that of PDP TV’s projected 9.44 million".

Oracle Database 10g set a new record this week by beating the results of an IBM DB2. The computer used was a Fujitsu Siemens with 8 SPARC64 V processors running the Solaris 10 OS. Oracle holds other records as well. "It is the preferred database for deployments of SAP solutions".
