The IBM, Sony, and Toshiba connexion. IBM, Sony, and Toshiba have extended their technology development alliance another five years. In the past, the companies worked on silcon-on-insulator (SOI) process technologies at 90 and 65 nm that resulted in the "Cell" microprocessor design. In the coming five years, the trio shall carry out research and development on process technologies at 32 nm and below and in the commercialization of these technologies. The strengths of the three companies complement one another, so the partnership should accelerate the development cycle, "from fundamental research to commercialization".
Intel has brought together more than 40 companies to form the Intel Storage Community for the benefit of IT managers, storage OEMs, and others. The Intel Storage Community is to focus on Intel and standards-based building blocks. Intel's vision is that of a constantly expanding resource. An important part of this vision is the Solutions Directory. ISC members post information about their storage products in the Solutions directory, which becomes a constantly updated resource for storage professionals. The Solutions Directory thus gives developers "‘one-stop-shop’ access to a broad range of standards-based building blocks".
Microsoft has demonstrated the first prototype of a multilingual interactive digital map of India, a collaboration between Microsoft Research India and the Department of Science and Technology. The digital map is a first-of-its-kind prototype. It uses Microsoft Virtual Earth technology, which is also used by Windows Live Local. "This is the first public demonstration of an ongoing Microsoft Research India project that explores innovative ways to create and disseminate geo-spatial data".
