Intel underwent the largest re-organization in the company's history in 2005 and has now unveiled a new brand identity to go along with the company's new orientation towards platforms. Platforms are a combination of a CPU, a chipset, and software, all designed to work together as a system. It took a while for Intel's first platform—Centrino—to catch on, but when it did it spread like wildfire. Now Intel has Viiv in the offing and presumably more brands around the corner. Intel's new brand identity has a hard act to follow. "Intel Inside" has been around for about 15 years, the dropped e in the original Intel logo for 37. Now Intel has produced new and redesigned logos and a new tagline, "Intel. Leap ahead". A large part of what Intel does in technology is "drive the next leap ahead".

Microsoft is currently testing a security update that it developed for the Windows Meta File vulnerability that was uncovered last week and hopes to have the patch ready by January 10, when it releases it monthly roundup of security updates. Automatic Updates will then deliver the patch automatically. In the meantime the vulnerability is "effectively mitigated by anti-virus companies with up-to-date signatures".

New wireless access points from Linksys utilize Power over Ethernet (POE). The network devices are good for places without a nearby power outlet, since power is supplied over their data cables. One can configure multiple service set identifiers (SSIDs) so small and medium businesses can run multiple networks, secure and open, both at the same time. The devices support WEP encryption. Big deal. And WPA. Much bigger deal. They will support WPA2 by way of a firmware upgrade soon. The wireless devices are Linksys' "first to provide POE capabilities".

Western Digital has increased the storage capacity of its Raptor hard drives to 150GB. These are enterprise-class hard drives primarily for servers and networked storage. The drives feature native command queuing, "which increases performance by intelligently ordering multiple simultaneous read and write commands".
