11/29 - There's low voltage CPUs and ultra low voltage products. And now there's the "'ultrafashionable' concept laptop".
Linksys' new wireless router and PC card that goes with it are now available. The wireless router and PC card come with SRX400 technology. SRX stands for speed and range expansion. The devices, according to Cisco, offer 2x the speed and 3x the range of their predecessors. They are even faster than fast Ethernet. But what about standards, you say. "SRX400 products are based on MIMO technology, a key component in the upcoming Wireless-N standard (802.11n)".
Maybe the winner will not be Blu-ray or HD DVD (high definition DVD). There is a new technology on the radar that theoretically offers 340 times the capacity and 20 times the speed of DVDs. The discs potentially could "read data at 120 megabits per second".
First Bill Gates delivered the keynote at Supercomputing 05. Now the chief scientist at Cray has defected to Microsoft. "Cray's proprietary CPU designs are increasingly being supplanted by clusters of commodity microprocessors".
The ECX (embedded compact extended) form factor is even smaller than the micro-ATX form factor. Potential applications include cars and point-of-sale terminals. ECX offers "a 75% reduction in space over micro-ATX boards".
LCD (liquid crystal display) technology tends to use less power than plasma display technology. "Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic) was able to lower the energy savings of its PDPs [plasma display panels] more than 40% ... However, Sharp also improved on the power savings of its LCD TV panels by 10% ... consuming about 12% less energy".
